The Department of Agriculture, the State of Maharashtra, and the World Bank came up with the idea for the Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture to create a drought-resistant and climate-resilient strategy for the agricultural industry as a long-term and sustainable solution to address the probable effects of climate change.
To encourage climate-resilient agriculture in the State of Maharashtra, the Department of Agriculture, Government of Maharashtra, in collaboration with the World Bank, launched Nanaji Deshmukh Krishi Sanjivani Prakalp, commonly known as Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture (PoCRA).
The Project on Climatic Resilient Agriculture (PoCRA) seeks to improve the climate resilience and financial success of 700,000 small (1-2 ha) and 10,000 marginal (less than 1 ha) farmers in 5000 communities throughout 15 drought and salinity/sodicity impacted districts of Maharashtra.
The project’s village-level development plan is the result of an extensive data-driven microplanning effort that the community conducted. The village development plan outlines steps for the best possible use of natural resources, appropriate agricultural rotation, adoption of cutting-edge technology, and enhanced market accessibility. The initiative focuses on executing this strategy using evidence-based science.
